Noodles were perceived in India as a very Chinese product. Therefore, Nestle developed tastemakers, a small packet of flavoring, including masala, chicken, capsicum and garlic making the taste of Maggi Noodles Indian.

The noodles then were marketed in India as a snack food. This strategy paid rich dividends of Nestlé as Maggi Noodles was the most successful launch of 1983.

Research indicates that the taste-maker and cooking instructions on the pack contributed significantly to the success of the product.

By 2003, India had emerged as the largest consumer of Maggi Noodles across all Nestlé markets in the world. Maggi Noodles had, in fact became synonymous within instant noodles in India.

Instant noodles market in Malaysia

In World Instant Noodles Associations report, Malaysia is one of the top instant noodle consumers in the world ranking number 13, with China, Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, India, and the United States leading the way.

In 2013 Malaysian are slurping 1.35 billion servings of instant noodles compared with 1.2 billion serving in 2009.

In 2013, the world consumed about 94 billion servings of instant noodles which mean that about 13 packets for every person. However Malaysian ate more with over 40 packets per person.

On average a packet of instant noodles (75g) contain about 300-350 kcal contributed by 45 g carbohydrate, 8 g protein and 13 g of fat.

Nestlé (M) Bhd retain its leadership in noodles with value share to 39% in 2013. The established presence of its Maggi brand in instant noodles is the key driver behind its leadership in 2013.
